Highlights are one of the most requested services in any salon — but achieving that flawless, seamless result every time takes more than just skill. The right tools matter just as much as technique.
Here's what every professional hair colourist should know about getting perfect highlights, every single time.
1. Section Cleanly and Consistently
Inconsistent sections are the number one cause of patchy highlights. Use a tail comb to create neat, even sections and work methodically from the nape upwards. The thinner and more consistent your sections, the more natural the result.
2. Choose the Right Foil
Not all foils are created equal. A good highlighting foil should:
- Hold colour without slipping — a textured or embossed surface grips the product and keeps it in place
- Be the right size — 5 x 11" is the industry standard for most techniques
- Dispense quickly — pop-up foils let you work with one hand, keeping your flow uninterrupted
PsychoFoil™ was designed with all of this in mind. The embossed texture grips colour perfectly, and the pop-up dispenser means you're never fumbling for your next sheet mid-section.
3. Apply Colour Evenly
Work from root to tip in smooth, even strokes. Don't overload the foil — a thin, even application gives more predictable lift and reduces the risk of bleeding.
4. Fold with Precision
A sloppy fold is an invitation for colour to bleed onto unwanted areas. Fold the bottom third up first, then fold in the sides, and finally fold the top down. Keep it tight but not so tight that you restrict the lift.
5. Timing is Everything
Always follow the manufacturer's recommended processing time and check regularly. Factors like body heat, hair porosity, and salon temperature all affect how quickly colour develops.
6. Rinse Thoroughly
When it's time to rinse, remove foils carefully and rinse each section thoroughly before shampooing. Leaving any residue can cause brassiness or uneven tone.
The Right Tools Make All the Difference
Even the most skilled colourist is only as good as their tools. If you're still using roll foil or flimsy pre-cut sheets, it might be time to upgrade. PsychoFoil™ pop-up foil sheets are designed by a colourist, for colourists — giving you the speed, precision, and reliability you need behind the chair.
